someone else's smileYou passed a woman on the street
You didn’t look her in the eye
But you saw her face reflected in a puddle
And you stopped for a moment when she smiled
You leaned down and scooped it up
And tucked it away, careful not to let it
Drip through your fingers and escape

You left her eyes and nose and cheeks
But her smile you kept
Hidden away

And sometimes when you looked in the mirror
You would take it, that stranger’s smile
And put it over your own
Wishing you could tape it down so it would stay forever

You would stare at the woman in the mirror and think
‘this is who you are’
And wished it could be true
